Be Part of Art

Past, Present & Future of the Royal Watercolour Society

30 January – 3 February 2019
Bankside Gallery, London.

The RWS has a rich and fascinating history and our Archive & Collection comprising artworks and documents associated with its artists since the formation of the Society in 1804, demonstrates this.

For the first time, paintings, letters, photographs and countless other forms of historic ephemera will go on display in an exhibition at Bankside Gallery to raise awareness of the importance of the Royal Watercolour Society to the past, present and future of British art.

Accompanying this will be an auction of works by contemporary members and a secret postcard sale of works by countless influential British artists. All proceeds from sales will facilitate the renovation of the new RWS gallery space at Whitcomb Street, just off Trafalgar Square.

London – A Sense of Place

Bankside Gallery

“London has been the home of the Royal Watercolour Society since its foundation in 1804.  Originally exhibiting in Pall Mall, then moving to Conduit Street in Mayfair (1938) before finally relocating to Bankside (1980), the Society has engaged with London for over 200 years.

Our artists have been inspired by its people, history, architecture, diversity and the many opportunities for artistic exploration and expression. London – A Sense of Place is a chance for the RWS to exhibit the works they have made in response to this extraordinary city.”

Bankside Gallery

The Royal Watercolour Society’s Spring Exhibition, Made in Colour celebrates the huge variety of hues, shades and tones available to artists working in water-based media. Whether, transparent, opaque or somewhere in between, watercolour has the ability to be both light and soft or vibrant and bold.   This exhibition will explore the many ways in which the Members of the RWS use colour in their practice.
